“The Hybrid Theory: Linkin Park”
Linkin Park is truly a unique band. They’re not like any other rock, rap or punk band. Their music is a mixture of different styles and that’s the way they create this new kind of music that call anybody’s attention. I consider myself a fan of this group not only for the evolution of their tune, I also admire the way they show their music to the world. They use new kinds of animation from Japan to do their videos, in which they show how they think about life, joining dreams and magic to a real world. Although all these, Linkin Park wasn’t the first name of the singular band, this is their story since the origin of their members as a band:
The history of Linkin Park began in 1996 when their guitarist, Brad Delson and their vocalist, famous Mike Shinoda started a band called Xero. They gather other members of the band, they were Mark Wakefield the vocalist, JosephHahn the DJ, Rob Bourdon the drummer, and "Phoenix" Farrell the bassist. Linkin Park as Xero made a four track demo tape including Fuse, Stick N' Move, Rhinestone, and Reading My Eyes.
Fortunately or unfortunately the second vocalist, Mark Wakefield left the band. This meant a change on the band, like the end of Xero but the beginning of something else. The band decided to begin from “cero” and change their name to Hybrid Theory. This new name, which later will be use to name their first material as Linkin Park, suggest a new meaning to the music of the group and a compromise of making a never known type of music, a “hybrid” between rap, rock and electronic music. Like if a member wasn’t too bad, "Phoenix" chose to leave the band to tour with another band, called "The Snax". The rest of the “new old band” continued to play together only for fun.
When the music of this band began to sound in the ears of many students of their college, they signed with Zomba Music when they played at The Whiskey Club in Los Angeles. The final addition to the band came in the form of Chester Bennington, his actually vocalist. Like in a fairytale, Chester was, in my own opinion, the missing part of this puzzle called Hybrid Theory. His extraordinary voice gives their music this gentle sound that can explode to a noisy scream when it is needed. He can hit pitch notes like no other. When you hear linkin park’s music although you don’t really loved it, you can noticed and get realized why he is so an important part of this band. How his voice mixture with Mike’s rapper voice, and how you hear his moderate voice in the middle of 5 seconds of rap, is like if you hear peace between war. All this sensations caused the music of Linkin Park on me and much other fans.
Returning to history and as I said, his arrival completed the band. Since then there were born six tracks that were received by their local fans with lots of applause. To their misfortune, some legal wrangling made it necessary to change the band's name. Apparently another band use the name of Hybrid Theory, spoiling all the meaning of this name. Loyal to their "hybrid' spirit Linkin Park was chosen. The members usually drove by Lincoln Park so why not use a similar sounding, unique name. Chester has been recorded to say he wanted a name which was unique, "where the music coulddefine the name rather than the name define the music". By that time Phoneix reborn with his return to the band. New demos were made and the chase for a record label was on.
Like fall from the heavens the Warner Records heard the music, and sign up with Linkin Park. This was the beginning of a new era, not only for the group of friends, but also for the lots of fans of rock music that open their ears to hear a new hybrid that included electronic with the DJ Joe (Joseph Hann) and the rap with Mike Shinoda.
Linkin Park released their debut album, Hybrid Theory In October 2000. Hits like One Step Closer, Crawling, and In The End were born. Hybrid Theory received 8x platinum. This material does not follow a the way of other bands that gave in their lyrics what people wanted to hear, like suicidal themes and songs that curse the humanity. This was because the band wanted to write lyrics honestly and they thought that unnecessary swear words take away attention from the music. They really wanted something that the public could listen to over and over again and enjoy repeatedly. They were young, they knew that if they open their minds and show their way of being to the world, they will accepted and they will loved it such as they love it.
After Hybrid Theory was released, Linkin Park's fame permitted them to tour all over the world. They toured with bands like POD, 3 Doors Down, and System Of a Down.
The lyrics of Hybrid Theory were still beating in our hearts although time passed. Linkin park knew that, that’s why in July of 2002,Linkin Park release the Hybrid Theory Remix album, Reanimation. These remixes included talent from rappers like Black Thought and 20 tracks were cut. This material only showed how the hybrid music of Linkin Park was tattooed on our hearts and brains. The fresh remixes of “Points of Authority”, which was the best of all for me, confirm how the same song can be changed so radical to be loved more than the original, but also remember the original when you hear them. The video of this song was made in 3-D animation where a battle was illustrated, a battle between the technology of the weapons and super evolved armies, and the power of faith.
In March of 2003, Linkin Park released their 2nd year album, Meteora. This album, which showed a guy painting graffiti using an oxygen mask, includes hits like Somewhere I Belong, Numb, and Faint. This album was really a controversy. Songs as Numb and Faint, talked about a feeling of being different from others, “Be more like me and be less like you”. In other song called Somewhere I Belong, the band decided to show in their video their loved to collect the action figures of Mazinger Z, they also showed an interest in Dali’s painting, so rare and unique, just like them.
Linkin Park has won numerous awards including an award at the Video Music Awards. Their popularity has grown all around the world. They are now truly international with a multitude of fans. From their hybrid genres to their non offensiveswear-free lyrics, to their use of turntables and samples, Linkin Park provide an entertaining and unique performance. Even nowadays you can hear not truly fans of Linkin Park, singing song of their first album, Hybrid Theory; and you can also hear the new remixes and reloaded songs from Meteora and Hybrid Theory, which new “hybrid” is the result of the mixture of the voice of Jay-Z (a hip-hop vocalist) and the well known evolution tune of a band called Linkin Park.
